Purchased on September 25th, 2011 from a gentleman in Umatilla Florida, this cart had been destined to be a project cart. Time passes and we came to hear that the cart was for sale for a VERY good price. Originally, the owner was told it was a 1962 model (not possible as they began production in 1963) and had put if off in a corner of his shop for another day.
We heard thru one of his sons that he had decided to sell it, and made arrangements to pick it up.
Upon arriving, I was excited to see that the body was in good shape, and the drive train appeared to be intact. The top fiberglass was shattered, but I didn't like hard tops anyway!
I little fuel down it's throat and the little 250cc purred to life! A quick once over to see that we weren't buying a can of worms and we loaded it for the trip to it's new home. I looked up the serial number (yes, I took my laptop with me) and found to my surprise that it was a 1979 AMF Harley "D" model cart! The owner was surprised too as he took the word of the previous owner as to the vintage. No worries, as I was happy that the drive belt cost had now dropped from $89 to $32! The 1963 cart has a VERY pricey drive belt!
These carts are very simple creatures. The basic engine had not changed thru most of it's incarnations, and parts are still fairly readily available for tune up, carb and pistons, etc. The 2 stroke can be a pretty capable mosquito fogger as well!
I located and downloaded the original AMF Harley Service Manual and Illustrated Parts Catalog as PDF's, which gave me all of the OEM part numbers. With these golden documents in hand, I felt confident that anything was possible!
